To Use Public Transportation on the Peninsula, TAKE CalTrain to the Menlo Park Station, and then the SamTrans Bus 296 to the campus. [Or, it’s less than a mile walk from the train station to the campus.] To walk to the campus, head south from the train station about 100 yards to Ravenswood Avenue. TURN LEFT (northeast) and walk down Ravenswood about a half a mile to Middlefield Road, turn right (southeast) and the campus is on the right-hand side of the street. TURN RIGHT (west) on Survey Lane.

“Earthquake Country Alliance Bay Area” is the new name of the “Bay Area
Earthquake Alliance” which was founded in 2009 as one of three regional
alliances of the statewide Earthquake Country Alliance (ECA). The new
name reflects this relationship and helps to standardize statewide
branding and messaging. ECA is the public-private partnership which
coordinates the annual Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill and
develops multi-sector educational resources available at
www.EarthquakeCountry.org.
We will soon be announcing a new website for ECA Bay Area and new leadership opportunities.

Please invite colleagues in your professional network to attend this
workshop. Working together we will further our goals to promote and
improve preparedness, mitigation and resilience.

PRESENTATION TRAINING SESSION:

• Earthquake Science and Audience Personalities: How Do We Best Bridge The Gaps? (April Kelcy, ECA Speakers Bureau Chair)
While there may be common characteristics of a given audience, the
individuals in that audience will have differing learning styles. Many
of them probably come into the room with some preconceived notions,
whether true or based on myths. Some will bring with them an emotional
context as well, such as well-honed denial, or unrealistic fears. As a
result, communicating science is not just about the talking points, it’s
about how we connect and clarify messages in a way individuals can really
absorb those messages and respond by taking appropriate actions.

In this workshop, you will learn about some of the typical personality
types in our audiences, and how to more effectively connect with them
by adapting to their distinct learning styles. There will also be lots
of interaction as we work together on developing more successful strategies
for answering FAQs about earthquake science. Come, learn and participate!
